Address by the Ambassador of Italy Gianluigi Benedetti on the occasion of “Pirelli 150 years Celebration” (Tokyo, 10 June 2022)

Good evening,

I warmly welcome all of you to the Residence of the Ambassador of Italy to Japan. Together with my wife Sabina, we are very pleased to host in this wonderful historical garden the celebration of one of the most iconic Italian brands: Pirelli.

We celebrate tonight Pirelli’s history, 150 years of success and growth, but also the launch of a new product, especially designed for the Japanese market: the Ice Zero Asimmetrico.

Giovanni Battista Pirelli founded the company in 1872 and probably did not imagine that in 150 years it would become a true global excellence, a company worldwide renowned for its cutting-edge technology, high-end production and its passion for innovation. We, as Italians, are very proud of this success.

When I arrived here in Japan 34 years ago as a young diplomat, Pirelli was one of the very few Italian brand based in the country, competing with Japanese giants.

I am very happy to come back and see that nowadays, with over 30 years of experience in the Premium and Prestige segment, Pirelli Japan is a very successful story. A company focused and leader in the high value tire market, constantly engaged in the development of innovative products capable to satisfy the most specific mobility needs of the final consumer.

In this regard, I want to thank Dimitrios Papadokos, Chief Commercial Officer for Asia and Pacific and Filippo Cibrario, President of Pirelli Japan, as well all the Pirelli team for their hard work and congratulate them for the success reached in Japan.

The constant search for innovation and the commitment to meet market specific requests is Pirelli’s “philosophy”. Thanks to solid partnerships with the most prestigious manufacturers, the products developed by Pirelli for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles are truly “tailor made”, as you can see looking at the four wonderful Italian excellences shown here tonight, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati and Pinarello, all dressed up with Pirelli tires.

This company “philosophy” is also behind the Ice Zero Asimmetrico, the product we presents today. In fact, this specific tire was designed and developed looking at the special needs of this market and it has been studied in order to guarantee the best performance in Japanese winters.

To conclude, I wish to greet and thank the many Japanese friends that are here tonight, whose presence confirms us that Japan, one of the most relevant industrial power in Asia and in the world, is very appreciative of Italian products and technologies.

My vision is that this reciprocal appreciation and interest for our excellent industrial productions, especially in the high tech sectors, will be a driving force in the coming decades to promote more and more collaborations and partnerships between our industries and companies.

Before leaving the stage to a brief presentation of the Ice Zero Asimmetrico and to Mr. Papadakos and Mr. Cibrario, let me thank you again for your participation and wish you a very nice evening of celebration.

Arigato gozaimasu.
